Skadar Lake
The largest lake in the Balkans
Lake Skadar is shared between Montenegro and Albania.
Its area can vary from 350 to 550 km², which makes it the largest lake in the Balkans. It also bears the distinction of being the largest ornithological reserve in Europe with 270 species observed.
It is the only habitat for pygmy cormorants, a species on the verge of extinction. The national natural park created in 1983 in the Montenegrin part represents 40000 hectares or 2/3.
